Buckeye High School wrestling turned in a strong showing at the OHSAA district meet Saturday at Kenston, placing fourth in the team standings and advancing four wrestlers to the state tournament.
Leading the way for the Bucks was 138-pounder Blake Bartos, who repeated as district champion in dominant fashion. Bartos needed just under eight minutes of total mat time over the entire weekend to secure his second straight district title, rolling through the bracket and capping his run with another convincing victory in the finals. His performance anchors Buckeye’s state-bound group and underscores his status as one of the area’s premier lightweights.
Buckeye’s lineup also produced a major career milestone at the tournament. Brody Zoul recorded the 100th victory of his career during district competition, adding a personal achievement to the team’s overall success. Zoul parlayed his milestone win into a deep run at his weight class.
Zoul finished as district runner-up, placing second and punching his ticket to the state tournament. He wrestled through the championship side of the bracket and secured key wins along the way, ultimately falling just short in the final but comfortably earning one of the coveted qualifying spots. His result, combined with Bartos’ title, gave Buckeye two wrestlers in the top two of their respective weights.
Also advancing to state were Collin Bartos and Logan Lettner, who each placed fourth in their divisions. Both wrestlers navigated the pressure of consolation rounds with their seasons on the line, securing the necessary wins to stay inside the top four and extend their campaigns. Their finishes gave Buckeye four total state qualifiers, a significant accomplishment that contributed heavily to the Bucks’ fourth-place team result.
McKee rounded out Buckeye’s placewinners with a sixth-place finish, adding valuable team points despite coming up just short of a state berth. His 100th career win at the meet highlighted a consistent and productive career in the Bucks’ lineup and provided another noteworthy moment for the program on the day.
With a district championship from Blake Bartos, a runner-up finish from Zoul, two additional fourth-place performances from Collin Bartos and Lettner, and McKee’s milestone, Buckeye leaves Chagrin Falls with momentum and representation across multiple weight classes at the state tournament. The Bucks’ fourth-place team finish and four state qualifiers position the program for a strong close to the postseason as the focus shifts to Columbus.
