Buckeye’s late-game push came up just short Saturday night, as the Bucks dropped a 64-61 non-conference decision to Highland at Buckeye High School despite a pair of standout offensive performances from Turner Dolata and Austin Hyre. Highland escaped with the win after Hyre’s last-second floater in the lane missed at the buzzer.

Highland seized control early, using a quick offensive start to build a 21-13 lead after the first quarter. The Hornets consistently found scoring lanes in the opening eight minutes, forcing Buckeye to play from behind. The Bucks, however, responded with a strong second quarter, tightening up defensively and finding better rhythm on offense to cut the deficit to just three points at halftime.

Out of the break, Buckeye continued its surge. Led by Dolata’s work inside and Hyre’s perimeter shooting, the Bucks outscored Highland in the third quarter to flip the game and take a 1-point advantage into the fourth. The third-quarter rally showcased the balance of Buckeye’s attack, with multiple players contributing to chip away at what had once been an eight-point hole.

Dolata powered the Bucks throughout the night, finishing with a game-high 24 points. The senior was a reliable option in the paint, scoring through contact and helping steady the offense whenever Buckeye needed a basket. Hyre provided the outside punch, totaling 19 points while knocking down four 3-pointers to keep Highland’s defense stretched and create space for teammates.

The fourth quarter turned into a possession-by-possession battle, with neither team able to create much separation. Highland made just enough plays down the stretch to reclaim the lead, setting up Buckeye’s final chance in the closing seconds. Trailing by three, the Bucks worked the clock and got the ball to Hyre, who drove and lofted a floater that narrowly missed as time expired, allowing Highland to secure the narrow victory.

Despite the loss, Buckeye’s ability to respond after a difficult first quarter and carry a lead into the final eight minutes highlighted the group’s resilience. With Dolata and Hyre both turning in strong offensive efforts and the team showing it can adjust and battle back, the Bucks positioned themselves with momentum and tangible positives to build on as they move deeper into the season.
