Buckeye Athletics Delivers Outstanding Winter Season of Achievement and Growth

The Buckeye Athletics Department recently presented its Winter Sports Report to the Board of Education, highlighting a season defined by excellence, resilience, and continued growth. Across all programs, student-athletes demonstrated a strong commitment to both competitive success and academic achievement, reinforcing the department’s core mission of developing well-rounded individuals.

Academic Excellence Leads the Way

A key point of pride this winter season was the academic performance of Buckeye’s student-athletes. Across all winter sports programs, athletes achieved an impressive cumulative GPA of 3.48, reflecting a consistent dedication to success in the classroom.

Leading the way was the Girls Basketball team, which posted an exceptional 4.02 GPA. This marks the second consecutive year they have earned the highest team GPA among winter sports, setting a benchmark for academic excellence throughout the department.

Competing Among Ohio’s Best

Reaching the state level is a rare accomplishment in high school athletics, with only about 2 to 5 percent of athletes achieving this milestone. This year, Buckeye had strong representation across multiple sports, showcasing the depth and strength of its programs.

In Bowling, Aubrey Reuter made history as both the first district champion and first state qualifier in school history. Gymnastics saw Nevaeh Sejka compete at the state level, while Miranda Pesto served as a state alternate. Sejka also stands among only two athletes in school history to compete in the all-around at state.

Indoor Track produced several qualifiers, including Ellen Steppenbacker, Brady Salazar, and Dimitry Pshonyak, along with the 4×800 relay team of Salazar, Pshonyak, Gavin Waibel, and Nolan Rieth.

The Wrestling program continued its tradition of excellence with four state qualifiers: Collin Bartos, Blake Bartos, Logan Letner, and Brody Zoul.

All-Ohio Honors Reflect Elite Performance

Buckeye athletes also earned All-Ohio recognition, placing them among the top competitors in the state.

Ellen Steppenbacker secured All-Ohio honors for the second time in Indoor Track, joined by Brady Salazar. In Basketball, Turner Dolata earned his second career All-Ohio selection. Wrestling standout Collin Bartos earned All-Ohio honors, while Blake Bartos capped off his career as a four-time All-Ohio athlete.

Championship Success Across Programs

Several teams captured conference and postseason success this winter:

  • Gymnastics claimed a conference championship with a team score of 132, continuing to model consistency and professionalism.
  • Girls Bowling delivered a historic season, finishing 17–0 in the regular season and securing back-to-back regular season titles. They added a NSBC conference tournament championship and a sectional title—both firsts in program history—while also qualifying for districts for only the second time ever. They are 33-1 over the past two seasons.
  • Wrestling extended its dominance with a 7–0 regular season and its sixth consecutive undefeated conference campaign. The team also placed second at sectionals, fourth at districts, and an impressive tenth at the state tournament.

Community involvement is encouraged to help verify records and fill in gaps. The goal is to establish a reliable, long-term system for tracking athletic achievements.
