MANSFIELD, Ohio — Buckeye High School’s Bucks men’s wrestling program turned in a strong showing at the 63rd J.C. Gorman Tournament on Saturday at Mansfield Senior High School, placing fourth in the team race behind a historic performance from senior 138-pounder Blake Bartos.

Competing in one of Ohio’s oldest and most prestigious regular-season tournaments, the Bucks remained in contention near the top of the 33-team field despite being without injured standouts Justin Augustine and Ryan Wilhelm. Coaches noted the team likely would have been in a battle for the championship with a full lineup, but the group still delivered a top-four finish against deep and experienced competition.

Bartos headlined the tournament with a dramatic 4-2 overtime victory over Ashland’s Mason Bauer in the 138-pound championship bout, widely viewed as the event’s marquee match. Bartos, a Wyoming commit and projected Division II state champion, and Bauer, ranked fifth in Division II, spent regulation in a tactical stalemate as both wrestlers struggled to generate offense against high-level defense. In the extra period, Bartos broke through to secure the decisive points and lock up the title.

“It’s awesome,” Bartos said after the win. “I came down here to win. That’s my job.” The championship bout marked the first official meeting between the two, though they have trained together in the past. “We have never wrestled in a match before, but we have trained together,” Bartos said. “I knew it was going to be a tough one. I knew it was going to be a slower match. He is very good on defense.”

The victory not only secured another individual title but also cemented Bartos’ place in tournament history. The Medina Buckeye senior became a four-time J.C. Gorman champion and the first wrestler ever to earn the Bill Flanegan Outstanding Wrestler award three times. Tournament officials noted that Bartos joins only a small group of athletes to win the event four times, underscoring his consistency and dominance throughout his high school career.

Even with two key starters sidelined, the Bucks collected enough wins and advancement points across the brackets to remain firmly in the upper tier of the standings. Wrestlers battled through a deep field that included state-ranked opponents at multiple weights, giving the team valuable midseason experience in a tournament environment that mirrors the intensity and depth of the postseason.

Buckeye’s coaching staff expects Augustine and Wilhelm to return from injury in the coming weeks, bolstering a lineup that has already shown the ability to compete with some of the state’s better programs. With Bartos leading the way and the roster nearing full strength, the Bucks leave Mansfield with a fourth-place trophy, a historic milestone for their senior standout and growing confidence as the season moves toward its championship phase.
