West Geauga pulls away from Buckeye in girls lacrosse matchup

West Geauga built an early lead and handed Buckeye a 12-0 loss Wednesday night at West Geauga High School, with the opening quarter setting the tone for the matchup.

Buckeye fell behind after a slow start that included draw-control infractions and three quick West Geauga goals. The Bucks spent much of the first quarter under pressure in the defensive end, and goalie Zoey Jarvis was forced to handle a heavy workload early. What could have been a competitive game, according to team notes, turned into a one-sided result as Buckeye tried to settle in against constant pressure.

The Bucks showed better resistance in the second quarter. Buckeye’s defense tightened, Jarvis picked up the intensity in cage, and West Geauga was limited to two goals before halftime. That stretch gave Buckeye one of its better defensive segments of the night, even as the team continued to battle through difficult situations. The author-supplied notes credited the players for keeping their composure and continuing to hustle throughout the game.

The second half proved more difficult to manage. Team notes said Buckeye was assessed 12 fouls in the third quarter, while West Geauga was whistled once in that stretch, and the game got away from the Bucks from there. The same notes described several dangerous follow-throughs that were not called. For the night, Buckeye’s summary reported a 22-1 disparity in free-position penalty shots and a 38-5 difference in penalties favoring West Geauga.

Even without a breakthrough on the scoreboard, Buckeye’s effort remained a focal point. The team notes emphasized that the girls stayed composed through adversity and came away from the loss with lessons that should help later in the season. In a game where scoring chances were hard to sustain, Buckeye’s most notable response came in the second quarter, when the defense and Jarvis helped slow the pace and keep the game from getting further out of reach before halftime.

Buckeye finished with no goals or assists in the 12-0 defeat. Faceoff statistics and a final saves total were not provided, but the flow of the game made clear that possession off the draw and defensive pressure were major factors, especially in the opening quarter and again after halftime.
